Carrie's Candle

On and on

I was standing in the hallway of oncology clinic yesterday talking with the father of a newly diagnosed patient. He was looking at the pictures on the bulletin board, pictures of patients who have been through this place in the last 2-3 years, and looking at Carrie's school picture. He pointed to it and said, "What a beautiful girl." "Yes, what a beautiful girl," was my reply. I see the picture every day, and I think of Carrie almost that often. I often tell people that I have the best job ever because I get to meet human beings when they are at their most vulnerable and then watch them triumph over their fears and learn how to live vivid lives. Carrie was alive every day that I knew her, and she remains alive here at Children's, in my heart, in the memories of all of the people who knew her.
