Molly Lappe
Our freshman year of high school, Carolyn and I went down to my grandparent's farm in Wilmington, IL. My grandfather, at the time, raised many animals, but mostly cows and pigs. I will never forget the look on her face when I told her that he 'raised' the animals... being a vegetarian, she was mortified.
It was that same day that she and I had been talking about school so far (we'd only been in high school about six weeks), and I told her I was having a great difficulty in Algebra. Being in Honors Algebra II/Trig at the time, she offered to help tutor me in the class (which, by the way, she did, and I passed with a B... thank you, Carrie!). I told her that I had no idea how she could just take on such difficult classes and what she said I will never forget: "Regina Dominican has given me the opportunity to excel, but that can only happen if I choose." Carrie, clearly, was wise beyond her years.
